During this period of time, the barley completes its first stage of growth, emergence. This is when the plant first gets its leaves and the stalk because more prominent. The roots, as well, establish themselves in the soil. It is vital that the barley makes it through this stage.

The first growth broke free of the soil on the fourth day of the experiment (03/19). It was a single barley sprout. On the next day dozens of barley sprouts had erupted and one fo the lids had begun to be pushed off by the force of all of the sprouts (03/20). On the eighth day, four of he six lids had been completely removed from their bases. Two lids were still completely locked to their bases. To keep consistent, the two remaining lids shall be removed from their containers.
